About

An arcade built from characters

UnicodeGames is a small, joyful idea taken seriously: take the games everyone already loves and rebuild them so they are drawn entirely with Unicode characters and emoji — no sprite sheets, no downloaded artwork, no game engine. The board, the pieces, the tiles: every pixel you see is really a glyph.

Why? Because text is the most universal, durable and lightweight medium on the web. Characters render crisply at any size, on any device, in any browser, and they weigh almost nothing — so our games load the instant the page does. There is no app to install, no account to create and nothing tracking you. Your scores live in your own browser and nowhere else.

It is also, frankly, a tribute. Unicode contains a quiet treasure trove of game glyphs — dice faces (⚀ ⚁ ⚂ ⚃ ⚄ ⚅), chess pieces (♔ ♕ ♖ ♗ ♘ ♙), card suits (♠ ♥ ♦ ♣) and a whole alphabet of shapes and symbols. Building games on top of them feels like using the medium exactly as it was meant to be used.
